Essaouira Day Trip from Agadir: What to See and Do

Essaouira is one of Morocco’s most charming towns. Its whitewashed medina, blue boats, sea walls and relaxed atmosphere have attracted artists, musicians and travellers for decades. It is a wonderful day trip from Agadir, combining a scenic coastal drive with a laid-back town that is easy to explore on foot.

Getting from Agadir to Essaouira

Essaouira is about 175 km north of Agadir. The road follows the Atlantic coast through Taghazout and Tamri, then crosses hills covered in argan trees. The drive usually takes around three hours with stops.

Look out for the famous goats climbing argan trees along this road. Be aware that many of these roadside scenes are set up for tourists, and herders usually expect a tip for photos.

What to see in Essaouira

The medina

Essaouira’s medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the 18th century to a planned design. Its streets are wider and calmer than in Marrakech, which makes it easy to wander. You will find art galleries, workshops of woodworkers using fragrant thuya wood, spice shops and small cafés.

The Skala ramparts

The Skala de la Ville is a long sea wall lined with old cannons, overlooking the crashing waves. It is one of the most photographed places in Morocco, especially at sunset.

The fishing port

The busy port is full of blue fishing boats, fishermen repairing nets and seagulls circling overhead. Near the port, simple grills serve fish and seafood caught the same day. Choose your fish, agree on the price, and it will be grilled for you.

The beach

Essaouira has a wide sandy beach south of the medina. It is often windy, which makes it a top spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, but less ideal for sunbathing. A walk along the beach is still lovely.

Argan cooperatives

The Essaouira region is the heart of argan country. Women’s cooperatives on the way show how argan nuts are cracked and pressed by hand, and sell oil for cooking and cosmetics.

Music and culture

Essaouira is known for Gnaoua music, a spiritual musical tradition with deep African roots. Every year, usually in June, the town hosts the Gnaoua World Music Festival, which attracts musicians and visitors from around the world. You may also hear Gnaoua musicians playing in cafés and squares at other times of the year.

Tips for your visit

  • Bring a jacket: Essaouira is often windy and cooler than Agadir, even in summer.
  • Shop for crafts: thuya wood boxes, argan products and paintings are good souvenirs. Prices are often more relaxed than in Marrakech, but bargaining is still normal.
  • Eat fish: fresh seafood is the speciality of the town.
  • Wear comfortable shoes: the medina is best explored on foot.

How to visit Essaouira from Agadir

The easiest way is a guided day trip with hotel pickup. You avoid the long drive yourself, stop at the best viewpoints and an argan cooperative on the way, and have free time to explore the medina. See our Essaouira day trip from Agadir, or read about what is included in the tour.
