Imsouane is a small fishing village on the Atlantic coast, around 90 km north of Agadir. It is famous among surfers for “The Bay”, a right-hand wave that can peel along the bay for a remarkable distance, often described as one of the longest waves in Africa. Even if you do not surf, Imsouane’s quiet beaches, colourful boats and sunsets make it a lovely place to visit.
Getting there
The road from Agadir follows the coast north past Taghazout and Tamri, then turns towards the sea through hills of argan trees. The drive usually takes around one and a half to two hours. There is little public transport, so most visitors come by car, transfer or with a surf school.
The waves
The Bay
The Bay is a long, gentle wave that breaks in the protected bay next to the port. It is ideal for beginners, improvers and longboarders, and on good days, surfers can ride it for a very long time. It can be crowded, especially during holidays.
Cathedral Point
On the other side of the headland, Cathedral Point is a more powerful, exposed break, better suited to intermediate and experienced surfers.

Village life
Imsouane is still a working fishing village. In the morning, boats return with their catch, and you can buy fresh fish or eat it grilled at small restaurants by the port. The village has a handful of cafés, surf shops and guesthouses, and a very relaxed atmosphere.
What else to do
- Watch the sunset from the cliffs or the beach.
- Walk the coast to quiet coves and viewpoints.
- Try yoga, offered by several surf houses.
- Enjoy the slow pace: Imsouane is a place to switch off.
When to go
The Bay works in many swell conditions, and there is often a surfable wave somewhere in the area all year. Autumn and winter generally bring the most consistent surf; summer can be smaller and very crowded during Moroccan holidays.
Tips
- Bring cash: there may be no ATM in the village.
- Book accommodation in advance during holidays.
- Respect the locals and the fishing activity in the port area.
- Bring a warm layer for the evenings, which can be windy.
