When northern Europe is cold and grey, Agadir is often sunny and mild. That is why the city is one of the most popular winter-sun destinations within a few hours’ flight of Europe. But what is winter in Agadir really like, and what can you do? Here is an honest guide.
The weather
From November to February, daytime temperatures are typically around 20°C, sometimes warmer on sunny afternoons. Nights are much cooler, and early mornings can feel chilly. Rain is possible, mostly in short spells, but sunny days are the norm.
Inland and in the mountains, temperatures drop further. The High Atlas peaks visible on clear days may even be covered in snow, while the coast stays mild.
Can you swim?
The Atlantic is cool in winter. Many visitors from northern countries still swim on sunny days, but others prefer the hotel pool. A heated pool is a good thing to look for when choosing a winter hotel.
Best winter activities
Surfing
Winter is the peak surf season, with consistent Atlantic swells along the coast north of Agadir. Beginners can learn in sheltered spots. Read our beginner’s surf guide.
Day trips
Cooler weather makes winter ideal for exploring inland towns that are very hot in summer, such as Taroudant and Marrakech, and for long walks in Essaouira.
Almond blossom in the Anti-Atlas
From late January to February, almond trees blossom around Tafraoute, one of the prettiest sights of the year.
Birdwatching
Many birds spend the winter in the wetlands of Souss-Massa National Park.
Adventure activities
Quad biking, buggy safaris and camel rides are more comfortable in the mild winter sun than in summer. Compare them in our adventure guide.
Hammam
A warm hammam is especially welcome on cooler evenings.
What to pack
- Summer clothes for sunny days
- A warm jumper or fleece and a light jacket for evenings
- A warmer jacket for mountain and desert trips
- Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat
- Swimwear for the pool or a brave sea swim
Christmas and New Year
Christmas is not a public holiday in Morocco, but many hotels and restaurants offer special dinners and events for visitors over the festive period. Flights and hotels are in high demand at this time, so book early.
Is winter a good time to visit?
If you are looking for mild, sunny weather, quieter beaches, good surf and comfortable sightseeing, winter is one of the best times to visit. If you want hot weather and a warm sea, choose summer or early autumn instead. Read our month-by-month guide to compare.
