Tiznit Travel Guide: The Silver City of Southern Morocco

Tiznit is a peaceful walled town about 90 km south of Agadir, at the edge of the Anti-Atlas. It is best known as Morocco’s capital of silver jewellery, and its pink ramparts, lively souks and relaxed squares make it a pleasant stop on trips to the south.

A little history

Tiznit’s walls were built in the 1880s under Sultan Moulay Hassan I, who made the town an important base in the south-west. The ramparts stretch for several kilometres around the old town, with gates and towers. Later, Tiznit became known for the craftsmen who settled here, especially silversmiths.

What to see

The silver souk

The highlight of any visit is the jewellery souk, where dozens of small shops sell silver necklaces, bracelets, rings, fibulae (traditional brooches) and decorative daggers. Many designs are inspired by traditional Amazigh jewellery, with geometric patterns, enamel and coloured stones. Prices are often lower than in big tourist cities, but always compare and bargain politely.

The ramparts and gates

Walking or driving around the walls gives a good idea of the town’s size and history. The main gates lead into the medina.

The Lalla Zninia spring

Inside the medina, the Lalla Zninia spring is linked to the legend of the town’s founding, named after a woman said to have discovered it. It is a quiet, historic spot near the old mosque.

The Grand Mosque

The minaret of the Grand Mosque is unusual, with wooden poles sticking out of its walls. Only Muslims may enter, but the minaret can be admired from outside.

Méchouar square

The main square near the entrance to the medina is surrounded by cafés, and is a good place to watch daily life over a mint tea.

Aglou beach

About 15 km from Tiznit, Aglou is a long, wild Atlantic beach popular with Moroccan families and surfers. Near the beach, small troglodyte fishermen’s dwellings are cut into the cliffs. It is a nice addition if you have time.

Tips for buying silver

  • Genuine silver is usually stamped; ask the seller to show you the mark.
  • Silver is often sold by weight for simple pieces; ask how the price is calculated.
  • Older and more complex pieces cost more because of the work involved.
  • Take your time, compare several shops, and only bargain if you intend to buy. Our bargaining guide explains how.

Visiting Tiznit from Agadir

Tiznit is about an hour and a half from Agadir by road. It combines well with the dramatic arches of Legzira beach on the coast, or with the mountain town of Tafraoute.
