Tafraoute is a small town in the heart of the Anti-Atlas mountains, surrounded by spectacular pink and orange granite boulders. It is one of the most beautiful landscapes in southern Morocco, and a world away from the beach resorts of the coast. A trip here combines mountain roads, traditional villages, almond trees and some of the most unusual scenery in the country.
Getting there
Tafraoute is about 165 km south-east of Agadir. The drive takes around three hours each way, depending on the route. The roads climb through the Anti-Atlas past terraced fields, argan trees and fortified granaries, with impressive viewpoints. It is a long day trip, but the scenery along the way is part of the experience.
What to see
The Ameln Valley
North of Tafraoute, the Ameln Valley is lined with villages built of stone and earth at the foot of the Jbel Lekst mountain. Palm trees, almond and olive groves surround the villages, and walking paths connect them. It is a beautiful place to see traditional Amazigh rural life.
The Painted Rocks
Near the village of Aguerd Oudad, a group of huge granite boulders was painted blue, pink and purple by the Belgian artist Jean Vérame in 1984. The colours have been repainted since, and the strange sight of blue rocks in the mountain landscape is one of the most photographed places in the region.
The Lion’s Head rock
Near Aguerd Oudad, look for the rock formation known as the “Lion’s Head” or “Napoleon’s Hat”, depending on who you ask. Erosion has shaped many of the boulders into faces and animals.
The town of Tafraoute
The town itself is small and friendly. It is known for its leather slippers, especially women’s babouches decorated with colourful embroidery, and for local almonds and argan oil.
Almond blossom season
Tafraoute is famous for its almond trees. Usually in February, the valleys turn white and pink with blossom, and the town traditionally celebrates with an almond festival. Exact dates depend on the weather each year. It is a magical time to visit.
When to go
- February–April: almond blossom and green valleys.
- October–November: pleasant temperatures and clear light.
- Winter: sunny days but cold nights in the mountains.
- Summer: very hot during the day.
Tips for your visit
- Bring a jacket: mornings and evenings can be cold in the mountains.
- Wear walking shoes for the rocks and village paths.
- Carry cash, as card payments are limited.
- Dress modestly and ask before taking photos of people in the villages.
- If you are prone to motion sickness, take something before the mountain roads.
Combine with Tiznit
Many day trips combine Tafraoute with the walled town of Tiznit, famous for its silver jewellery. Read our Tiznit travel guide, and see our Tafraoute and Tiznit day trip from Agadir, with hotel pickup included.
