Fantasia (Tbourida): Morocco’s Spectacular Horse Tradition

Riders in white robes charge side by side on richly decorated horses, raise their long rifles, and fire in perfect unison in a cloud of smoke. This is Fantasia, called Tbourida in Morocco, one of the country’s most spectacular traditions. Seeing it is an unforgettable experience.

What is Tbourida?

Tbourida is a traditional equestrian performance that recreates historical cavalry charges. Its name comes from “baroud“, the gunpowder used in the rifles. A troupe of riders, called a sorba, gallops in a straight line across a long track, then all riders fire their muskets at the same moment, on the signal of their leader, the moqadem.

The goal is perfect synchronisation: the best troupes fire so precisely together that the shots sound like a single explosion.

History and heritage

The tradition has deep roots in Moroccan history, linked to horsemanship and military skills that were celebrated at festivals and religious gatherings. Today, Tbourida is performed at moussems (regional festivals), weddings, national celebrations and competitions, and troupes come from across the country.

In 2021, Tbourida was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising its importance to Moroccan identity.

The horses and riders

The horses are usually Barb or Arab-Barb breeds, known for their strength, endurance and agility. They wear elaborate embroidered saddles and decorated bridles. Riders wear traditional dress, often white djellabas and turbans, and carry long, decorated muskets.

Training takes years. Riders must control their horses at full gallop while handling their rifles, and the whole troupe must move as one. In recent decades, women’s troupes have also become part of the tradition.

How a performance works

  1. The troupe lines up at one end of the track.
  2. The riders walk forward slowly, then accelerate into a full gallop.
  3. At the leader’s cry, they raise their rifles and fire together.
  4. They pull up their horses and return to start again.

It is loud: children and sensitive spectators may want to bring ear protection.

Where to see Fantasia near Agadir

The easiest way for visitors is a Fantasia evening show, which usually combines a horse performance with a traditional dinner, music, dancing and other entertainment. Our Agadir Fantasia Berber night includes transport from your hotel.

If your visit coincides with a regional moussem, you may also see authentic Tbourida competitions, which are usually free and very popular with local families.

Respect the tradition

  • Stay behind barriers and away from the track.
  • Do not use flash photography close to the horses.
  • Ask before photographing riders up close.
